Every year, in August, Gmunden am Traunsee – Ceramics Town becomes the Mecca for ceramic arts and turns the Town Hall Square and the Promenade near the lake into a stage for the European Ceramics elite.
The organisers choose only effective cities of arts for the year, cities that present an ambitious mix and a selection of contemporary works in ceramic of any shape. This way the visitors are able to get a good sense of the European pottery scene of the year. Thanks to the invitation of guests from abroad a more intense, professional, as well as cultural exchange is possible not only among the ceramists taking part to the project, but also among these and the visitors.
Together with the market there is also the Room of Contemporary Ceramic Art: works of both young and renowned ceramists from Austria and abroad are displayed in the galleries and exhibition rooms in Gmunden.
The main promoter of the Pottery Market is the Association for the Promotion of European Ceramic Artists (VereinzurFörderungEuropäischerKeramikkünstler). It was born in Gmunden in 2003, aiming to promote the work of young ceramists from all over Europe. The word "promotion" refers to the supply of spaces and material, but also to the advertisement of the artists and their creations.
Consequently 2003 is also the year when the Ceramics Symposium of Gmunden, born in 1956, changed its focus, according to the Association'snew belief. Since then the Keramiksymposium has been promoting the innovation of ceramic art, being also an occasion of meeting and inspiration for the artists, thanks to their collective work.
